Annie’s non-profit is being called “Pocket Full of Rocks” from a journal entry she wrote about the beauty and spontaneity of when Luca—or any child for that matter—gave her a tiny pebble as if it was the most precious gift of all. And, at that moment, it was. She always thought if she wrote a book, this would be the title. I’ve borrowed it for this organization because it crystalizes the kind of work Annie wanted to do in the world—spread kindness one pebble at a time.
We’ve been slowly but surely putting things in place in order to continue the work that Annie started—in her own ways. She always looked out for the “little guy,” she was passionate about the environment and felt strongly about giving back to her community. So that’s what we’re going to do. Right now our focus is on community, conservation and kindness and of course breast cancer advocacy.
The first project is one that begins right in her Woodbury home. Where she was raised and where she returned to raise her family. When Annie graduated from Nonnewaug High School, she received the Citizenship Award. She always loved that she got that award because she felt so strongly about its meaning. So, we’re going to fund a scholarship each year to a graduating Nonnewaug senior who exemplifies the same characteristics.
Which means we are fundraising! We have a bank account and everything and are happy to accept contributions to this fund. Although we are officially listed with the State of Connecticut, we are awaiting the (long!) approval period by the IRS. This means that until the IRS has recognized our 501c3 status as tax-exempt, donations are not tax-deductible. However, if the IRS does grant recognition, deductions will be deductible retroactive to the date the organization was incorporated.
The website is still being worked on and will eventually accept electronic donations. Until then, we’re doing it the old-fashioned way—by mail to our PO Box in Watertown. (full address below).
You can subscribe to this newsletter for updates on our projects and our goals. And we’d love to hear from you!
